Meeting Your Creative Needs

Technicolor Games is the arm of our group that focuses on the creative needs for the gaming industry. We’ve collaborated with many of the top game developers in the world and our work can be seen in many of the most regarded games out there.

FIFA 20

FIFA 20 is the latest iteration from the largest sports video game franchise on the planet. Bringing The World’s Game to new levels of life requires incredible attention to detail, and Technicolor Animation & Games has been upping the ante on character and environment photo-realism for the past 14 years of the franchise – the longest-running engagement for the team. For FIFA 20, they created approximately 500 player-likeness heads, an all-time high – capturing the essence of each player down to their individual hairstyles and the most complex of tattoos. This required a combination of skills whether creating content from scratch or maximizing game engine integration. The team also worked on the creation of uniforms – including artwork – as well as stadium, story-mode assets, soccer shoes and balls; with the creation of final in-game assets bringing state-of-the-art graphical improvements in stunning HD – and a completely reimagined, modern gaming experience for some of the world’s most avid fans.

NHL 20

Technicolor Animation & Games teamed up once again with EA for another installment of their popular hockey franchise game. For NHL 20, the team was actively involved in newly-introduced feature animations; their full range of animation work included Player Intros, Player Emotes, Signature Player Strikes, Goalie Animations, Team Celebrations, and more. To achieve the most realistic looking game moves, team members got their head in the game using real skates and hockey sticks. The team’s handling of assets included Scanned and Traditional Heads, Mascots, Stadiums, Uniforms, and Accessories. Highly-skilled artists trained specifically for traditional heads – which require deep sculpting skills and understanding of facial anatomy – worked closely with the EA team to understand and meet their expectations for the players and legends of the game.

NBA 2K20

The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat. It’s all in the face. See the work of Technicolor Animation & Games in the highest quality facial animation for the hotly anticipated NBA 2K20. Using data captured from actor performances via head-mounted camera, the team – including 20 animators at peak times – worked on facial animations and polishing of the main players, as well as commentators Kenny Smith, Magic Johnson, and Shaquille O'Neal in the pre-game, halftime, and post-game shows. The team then went on to polishing mo-cap body animations for post-game shows. It all contributed to making NBA 2K20 and its next level features the closest thing to playing in the real league!

Mortal Kombat 11

Technicolor Animation & Games put their combined artistic and technical experience to the test for Mortal Kombat 11, which called for super heroic actions mixed with realism, in a Gameplay environment where players choose from a roster of fighters with unique abilities and Fatalities. This was the team’s first opportunity to be a part of the iconic fighting video game franchise from NetherRealm Studios. With motion captured data as their starting point, Technicolor animators worked tirelessly to keep the Mortal Kombat style intact. The enhancements and timings on hits and Combo attacks had to be spot-on – without losing their grace, or the brutal feel of the well-choreographed action sequences.

With our team of talented artists, we've partnered with multiple development studios, effectively expanding their own art teams.  Our Art Directors, who oversee all our games projects, will oversee these designs from concept to in-engine execution.

Motion capture cleanup and re-targeting

Our motion capture animation team has worked on everything from highly complex in-game animations, high end cinematic content, to Faceware retargeting and everything in between. We can supply experienced shoot Supervision/Direction, as well as all of our animation services. Working with Motionbuilder and Maya (and Max), our team offer experienced scalability to any mocap based production.

Keyframe animation

Keyframe animation has been at the core of our studio since its inception; we win Emmys for our animation!  We cast our talented animators based on their skills and passions, rather than defining them as ‘games animators’ or ‘tv animators’, so when a new project comes in, we ensure we crew it up with the most relevant, talented highly suited animators to suit its needs. Working on both AAA and mobile titles, our keyframers have breathed life into multiple award winning games.

Asset creation

Technicolor’s asset group is an industry leading powerhouse of skilled environment, hard surface, organic, and character artists. We remain resolutely pipeline agnostic, seamlessly dropping into our partners’ pipelines and toolsets.   At any time we could be working in Unreal, Unity and several proprietary engines, taking assets through the pipe from concept to level completion. Our skilled Substance trained surfacing artists create next generation PBR assets for top industry clients. Our team includes many highly talented sculptors, producing characters, creatures, as well as working on blend shapes and photo real heads.

Game Engine integrated pipelines

We offer support and integrated pipelines for multiple game engines. We currently work with four proprietary AAA engines as well as Unreal 4 and Unity. Our robust technical art team partner with our clients to ensure tools and processes are in sync, and our artists are able to work effectively. Our engine involvement ranges from full multiplayer level construction, destruction, down to asset import & testing.

VR & AR

Technicolor is deeply involved in creating immersive entertainment, which puts us on the frontline of the virtual reality evolution as it gathers momentum. With our in-engine expertise, skilled artists, and family of VFX brands including MPC, Mikros, the Mill and Mr. X, we collaborate with leading developers on exciting VR games and other immersive experiences.

Breaking the Mold at the Zbrush Sculpt-off

Technicolor’s very own Vichar Bhatt was one of 24 global artists selected to participate in a live sculpt-off at the 2016 ZBrush Summit in Los Angeles this September past. Vichar was awarded a third-place finish in the organic sculpting category for his piece. The annual ZBrush Summit brought together Pixologic and ZBrush artists from around to world to take part in exclusive workshops and activities, as well as meet with their many fans.
